Chapter 17

At the office, Sam wrapped up a few loose ends since she’d be out for a few days. At her meeting with Richard, she went over the details of the association meeting, when she would be back, and what she hoped to find.

“I never knew there was such a thing,” Richard had said when he learned about the meeting. “And they invited you even though you aren’t a Santa?”

“Yep.”

“Aren’t you the least bit worried you’ll discover something you don’t want to find?”

“Like what?” Sam asked.

“I don’t know. What if this is just a business? What if it colors your memories of Santa and Christmas?”

She wondered that very thing in the beginning, but was not disappointed at all when she met Joe and Kris, and was even more excited when she thought about the letter and the potential opportunity to meet Nick.

“I am going where the story leads me,” she said with a smile. “See you in a few days.”

Later, she took Ace to a trainer to stay while she was away. She was excited to take this opportunity for Ace to learn some manners and a few commands. Sam was confident she would return to a new and improved Ace, although it was strange to go to sleep without him snoring at her feet.

Sam checked her bags against the packing list once more and drained her last cup of coffee the next morning as she heard Joe pull into the driveway. She opened her door as he was raising his hand to knock, and laughed when she saw a cup of something steaming in his other hand as he held it out to her.

“Is that for me?”

“Yep. You take this, and I’ll take your bags.”

Sam locked her door, and they walked to the car in the driveway.

“Red, like Santa’s sleigh,” she said.

“Yes, I guess it is.” Joe chuckled.

Settled in the front seat, Sam asked, “How long is the ride?”

“A few hours. Help yourself to anything in the snack basket.”

Curious, Sam peeked inside the basket. It held an assortment of baked goods and a thermos. There were also napkins and a little container for trash.

“Wow, Beth thought of everything.” She reached for a cookie and napkin as they pulled away from her driveway.

They settled into a comfortable conversation, which made the drive feel shorter than it was. Joe told stories of past association meetings and set her mind at ease about what to expect. He asked whether she had questions about the conference.

“I do have a question. When do we use the red ticket?” Sam asked.

“What red ticket?”

“I found one in my invitation. It’s for ‘a special meeting.’”

“Did it say with whom?”

“No, and it didn’t say when, or where, either. It was very mysterious.”

“Kris will be at check-in. Ask him. He’ll have more details about the schedule and activities.”

“Do you think it’s with Nick?” Sam asked, before taking a quick drink from her travel mug.

“Could be.”

“Have you ever met him?”

“Who?”

“Nick.”

“I guess it depends on what you mean by meeting him. I sat at a table with him last year for a meal.
